Google AI Overviews SEO.

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that now sit above the traditional search results for a huge share of Google searches. They answer the question before anyone scrolls, and they decide which businesses get mentioned and which disappear.

This page explains how they work, what they mean for your SEO, and how I help UK businesses earn citations in them.

The basics

What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are the AI-written answers that appear at the top of Google Search for many queries. Instead of only listing links, Google uses generative AI, powered by its Gemini models, to read multiple sources and compose a direct answer, with citations to the pages it drew from. AI Overviews were officially launched in the US in May 2024 and reached the UK later that year, and they have expanded to more queries ever since.

They are part of a wider set of AI features in Search. AI Mode goes further still: a fully conversational search experience where follow-up questions replace new searches. Google describes all of this as additive to classic search, and the data so far backs that up: search volume keeps growing, but where the clicks land is shifting.

For SEO, the key mechanical point is this: an AI Overview is assembled from crawled, indexed web pages. Google is not inventing answers from nowhere. It is choosing whose content to trust, quote and link. Which means being chosen is something you can influence.

The mechanics

How AI Overviews work, and when they appear

When you search, Google decides whether generative AI would genuinely help. If so, its systems run related searches in the background, gather candidate passages from ranked results, and synthesise them into a summary. Sources are selected for relevance, quality and trust, then linked as citations alongside the answer.

AI Overviews appear most for informational queries: how-to questions, comparisons, explanations, planning tasks. They appear least where Google judges a simple set of search results serves better, such as navigational searches and many high-stakes topics. Commercial queries sit in between and are shifting month by month, which is why I track this per keyword rather than guessing.

Two details matter for optimisation. First, the sources cited are usually pages already ranking well somewhere in Google Search for the query or its variants, so classic rankings still feed the machine. Second, citation is passage-level: Google quotes the paragraph that answers, not the page as a whole. A well-structured page can earn citations for dozens of related queries.

The stakes

How AI Overviews impact SEO and organic traffic

The honest answer: the impact of AI Overviews is real, uneven and measurable. Industry studies consistently show lower click-through rates on queries where an overview appears, because the answer satisfies many searchers on the page. If your traffic depends on simple informational content, you have probably already felt it.

But the picture is not simply "AI takes your clicks". Cited sources gain visibility they never had at position six. Impressions from AI features now show up in Google Search Console data, and the clicks that do come through tend to be better qualified, because the searcher has read the summary and still wants more. Meanwhile organic search remains the biggest channel for most UK businesses I work with, by a distance.

Strategically, AI Overviews punish shallow content and reward genuine expertise. They compress the value of being averagely visible and multiply the value of being the source. That is a threat to volume publishers and an opportunity for specialists, which is precisely why the businesses I work with lean in rather than opt out.

The right response is not panic, and it is not more content for its own sake. It is a deliberate move up the trust ladder: search visibility built on being worth quoting.

The playbook

How to rank in AI Overviews

There is no secret trick, and anyone selling one is guessing. There is a set of practices that reliably increase how often you appear in AI answers. This is the optimisation work I do, page by page.

01

Answer the question directly

AI Overviews are assembled from passages that resolve a query cleanly. Put the direct answer high on the page, then expand. Pages that make Google dig rarely get quoted.

02

Structure content for extraction

Clear headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables. The easier a passage is to lift, the easier it is to cite. This also happens to be good writing, which is not a coincidence.

03

Cover the follow-up questions

AI Overviews often answer the query and the next two questions behind it. Content built around genuine search intent, not just a keyword, earns more citations.

04

Strengthen E-E-A-T signals

Named authors, real experience, credentials and evidence. Google leans on trust signals hard when deciding what is safe to quote in an AI answer.

05

Keep technical SEO clean

You cannot be cited if you cannot be crawled and indexed. Solid technical SEO, sensible structured data and fast pages are the entry ticket, exactly as Google Search Central describes.

06

Build your entity and brand signals

Mentions, reviews and consistent information across the web teach Google who you are. Brands with a clear entity footprint appear in ai answers far more often than anonymous sites.

07

Keep ranking in classic search

Most cited sources already rank on page one for the query or a close variant. Ranking well in traditional search remains the strongest single predictor, so classic SEO still pays the bills.

The measurement

Tracking your AI Overview performance

You cannot manage what you do not measure, and AI visibility is now a metric like any other. Search Console shows the combined picture of impressions and clicks from search, including AI features; dedicated tracking fills the gap by recording when your pages are actually cited in ai overviews for the queries that matter to you, and who is cited when you are not.

I report both monthly, alongside rankings and traffic, so you can see whether the optimisation is working in classic search and AI search at the same time. When something moves, you will know why. The full detail is on my AI visibility tracking page.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Chasing AI Overviews with thin, AI-generated pages. Google allows AI-assisted content, but it rewards usefulness, and mass-produced filler earns neither rankings nor citations.
  • Blocking AI crawlers in a panic. Opting out of AI features mostly removes you from the conversation while competitors take your place.
  • Ignoring the queries where AI Overviews appear. If they dominate your informational keywords, your content strategy needs commercial queries and citation-worthy depth, not more of the same.
  • Measuring nothing. Without tracking impressions, clicks and citations you are guessing about the impact of AI Overviews on your business.

The horizon

Where AI search goes next

AI Overviews and AI Mode are steadily converging into one continuous AI search experience. What began as the Search Generative Experience became AI Overviews, then AI Mode, and the direction is clear: more AI summaries, more conversation, fewer plain link lists. The industry now calls the response generative engine optimization; I call it AI SEO and treat it as part of the day job.

The playbook stays anchored in foundational SEO best practices. Optimize your content for Google and for people first, because strong content for Google AI Overviews is simply strong content: expert, structured, evidenced and worth quoting. Everything faddish burns off; that does not.

Questions

AI Overviews and SEO: your questions

The questions clients actually ask, answered without the spin. Anything else, ask me directly.

Will AI Overviews reduce my organic traffic?

For some queries, yes, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Click-through rates fall when an AI Overview answers the question outright, especially for simple informational searches. But impressions from AI features can also bring new visibility, and cited sources still earn clicks with higher intent behind them. The net impact depends on your query mix, which is exactly what I analyse first.

What determines which sources get cited?

Google has not published a recipe, but the pattern across studies and my own testing is consistent: pages that rank in the top organic search results, answer directly, carry strong trust signals and come from recognisable brands get quoted most. Relevance to the exact phrasing of the query matters more than in classic rankings, which is why one page can be cited for dozens of long-tail variations.

How do I track my performance in AI Overviews?

Google Search Console includes AI Overview impressions and clicks within its Search results data, though it does not break them out separately yet. Alongside that, I run dedicated AI overview tracking that records when and where your pages are cited for your target queries, so you can see movement month to month.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

You can use nosnippet and related controls to limit how your content appears in AI features, and Google Search Central documents the options. For most businesses I advise against it. Opting out does not stop the AI answering; it just stops the answer mentioning you.

Does Google allow AI-generated content?

Yes, according to Google there is no penalty for content made with AI assistance. The policy targets quality, not authorship. In practice, though, generic AI output rarely earns citations because it adds nothing the model does not already know. Human expertise with AI assistance works; automation alone does not.

Is this the end of SEO?

No. It is the end of SEO that relied on being one of ten links nobody scrutinised. Search is still where buying decisions start, and AI Overviews are built from web content that someone has to create and optimise. The winners are shifting from whoever publishes most to whoever is most worth quoting. That is a fight small, expert businesses can win.
